Vioxx
|
Vioxx, also known as Rofecoxib, is another of a new class of drugs called COX-2 inhibitors, which work to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis by blocking COX-2 enzymes that cause inflammation, similar to Celebrex. Manufactured by Merck & Co. the drug has been widely prescribed over 52 million times since it was introduced in June 1999.
Recent research, however, indicates that Vioxx may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and blood clot in patients taking the medication. Patients taking Vioxx were found to be four times more likely to suffer from heart attack than those taking naproxen (Aleve). Researchers are studying whether this side effect is specific to all COX-2 inhibitors.
The FDA reports that Vioxx has also been linked to at least five cases of a nonbacterial type of meningitis (aseptic meningitis), a side effect that, although rare, is serious.
