Background Information on Serzone
Serzone (nefazodone hydrochloride) is a prescription drug used in the treatment of depression.
Serzone Recall and Withdrawal
Bristol-Myers announced in May 2004 that it would stop manufacturing Serzone. The manufacturer was influenced by a severe decline in sales following widespread reports of liver failure in patients.
The Serzone recall announced by Bristol-Myers did not require the immediate withdrawal of the drug from the market. In fact, pharmacies will be permitted to sell current supplies of the drug to patients.
Serzone and Liver Failure
Concerned about reports of liver failure, in December 2001 the FDA required Bristol-Myers to include a black box warning on the Serzone label. Such warnings are reserved only for drugs with the most serious of side effects.
The manufacturer of Serzone warned healthcare provider about cases of life-threatening liver failure. It is estimated that the rate of liver failure in Serzone patients is approximately 3-4 times greater than the expected rate of liver failure.
